A small tennis ball resting on top of a large basketball; the bottom of the basketball is at height h above the ground (orange line), marked with a double arrow labelled h.
A vertical stack of four balls of decreasing size labelled B1 (bottom, largest), B2, B3, B4 (top), with the label n=4; the bottom of B1 is at height h above the ground (orange line), marked with a double arrow labelled h.

A) A tennis ball with the mass m2m_2 sits on top of a basketball with the mass m1m_1. The bottom of the basketball is a height hh above the ground, and the bottom of the tennis ball is at a height h+dh + d above the ground (see the first figure). The balls are dropped to the ground. To what height does the tennis ball bounce?

Note: Work in the approximation where m1m_1 is much larger than m2m_2 and assume that the balls bounce elastically.

B) Now consider nn balls, B1,⋯ ,BnB_1, \cdots, B_n, having masses m1,m2,⋯ ,mnm_1, m_2, \cdots, m_n (with m1≫m2≫⋯≫mnm_1 \gg m_2 \gg \cdots \gg m_n), sitting in a vertical stack (see the second figure). The bottom of B1B_1 is at a height hh above the ground, and the bottom of BnB_n is a height h+lh + l above the ground. The balls are dropped. In terms of nn, to what height does the top ball bounce? If h=1.0 mh = 1.0\ \mathrm{m}, what is the minimum number of balls needed for the top one to bounce to a height of at least 1.0 km1.0\ \mathrm{km}? The same question, if the top ball is to reach the Earth’s escape speed?

Note: Work in the approximation where m1m_1 is much larger than m2m_2, which is much larger than m3m_3, etc., and assume that the balls bounce elastically. Ignore wind resistance, etc., and assume that ll is negligible.

Data: ll is not very large, REarth=6.4⋅106 mR_{Earth} = 6.4 \cdot 10^{6}\ \mathrm{m}, g=9.8 m/s2g = 9.8\ \mathrm{m/s^2}, .
