Условие
Consider a thin flat disk of mass and face area at temperature resting initially in weightlessness in a gas of mass density at temperature . One of the faces of the disk is covered with a thermally insulating layer, the other face has a very good thermal contact with the surrounding gas: gas molecules of mass obtain the temperature of the disk during a single collision with the surface.
Estimate the initial acceleration and maximal speed of the disk during its subsequent motion.
Assume the heat capacity of the disk to be on the of order , where is the number of atoms in it, and is the Boltzmann constant, and molar masses of the gas and the disk’s material to be of the same order. The mean free path length of molecules is much larger than the size of the disk. Neglect any edge effects occurring at the edge of the disk.

Order-of-magnitude estimates, correct up to a numerical coefficient of order one.

The initial pressure on the thermal insulating layer is , where is number density of the gas. It originates from multiplying the flux and momentum that one molecule transfers (elastic collision), where is the normal component of molecule’s velocity, and taking the average . When applying the same idea to the surface with good thermal contact, we find out that the flux remains the same, although the momentum increases:
where is the normal velocity component of the molecule flying away from the disk. Thus for pressure :
which is correct to some numerical coefficient of the order of one.
The net force acting on the disk:
and then the initial acceleration:
Since , the disk will accelerate until its speed becomes of the order of average gas molecules speed. After the velocity of the disc becomes on the order of , the flux of molecules reaching the backside decays faster than exponentially due to the nature of the molecular velocity distribution in the ideal gas (for example, and ). That leads to a proportional decrease in a propelling pressure . In order to compensate for an initial bias , it will take around a factor of one on the velocity of the disk. Therefore the maximum velocity of the disk:
Here we assumed that the disk will not cool close to before it reaches the maximum velocity. Let us show it. The acceleration time is approximately:
Since the power of heat removal is maximal at the beginning (at zero velocity), we can upper-bound estimate the time for the disk to cool as , where is the total heat of the disk. The initial thermal power of heat removal can be estimated as:
and the total heat . Given , we obtain:
Finally, , and indeed disk will not cool significantly before it reaches the velocity about .
