IAO 2007, Теория, Група β, английски — Задача 2. Space sail.
Theoretical round. Problems to solve · 29 септември 2007 г.
Бележка
Maybe not all problems have correct questions. Some questions (maybe the main question of the problem, maybe one of the subquestions) may have no real sense. In this case you have to write in your answer (in English or Russian): «situation is impossible – ситуация невозможна». Of course, this answer has to be explained numerically or logically.
Source availability
The numerical table of planetary data is not present in the32-file2007 archive inventory. The file bgtheo6.jpg contains only a translation of column headings, without numerical planetary rows. No table from another year has been substituted. The separately archived airplane/Moon photograph is included in full with question4.
Note for jury and team leaders
The proposed sketches are not full; the team leaders have to give more detailed explanations for students. But the correct solutions in the students’ papers (enough for8pts) may be shorter.
Source photograph damage
The second and fourth official solution photographs lose some initial letters or words at the left edge. Ellipses inside the affected solution text mark those source losses. Legible formulas, results and grading remarks are retained; missing letters have not been silently supplied. The solution for question4 contains no explanatory drawing, although the question requests one.
Printed source annotations
The galaxy key prints the same final logarithm1+HL₂/c in its classical and relativistic final lines, despite different numerical totals22.46 and22.82. The sail key repeats Δp and uses the printed multiplication/division notation. The source results and formulas are reproduced without scientific correction; punctuation and multiplication spacing are normalized only for mathematical rendering.
Условие
A space probe for research of the asteroid belt is sent to objects of researches by using a solar sail. The probe-system of mass ton was moving around the Sun in a circular orbit of radius 1 a.u. Then such a sail (that was earlier a part of the probe-system) was opened and after half a revolution around the Sun the probe has reached Ceres. Estimate the area and thickness of this sail. Consider the sail is of mirror-type. The typical distances of the asteroid belt bodies from the Sun are 2.8 a.u. The constant of total solar irradiation is .
Решение
Since the square of the sail is not varying the number of photons falling on the sail is reversly proportional to the square distance to the Sun and force of the light pressure is central, i.e. . It means that the probe will have an orbit according to the Kepler’s laws but the “effectivity of gravitation” will be smaller. In other words the probe moves as in gravitational field of a Sun with reduced (from to ) mass. That is the orbit of the probe with the sail is an ellipse with perihelion at the Earths’ orbit (distance to the Sun is ) and aphelion (since it takes half of rotation around the Sun to reach it) in the asteroid belt (distance to the Sun is ). By using the II Kepler law, the law of conservation of energy for the points of perihelion and aphelion, and also the equation for the circular orbit (without sail), one can find (these procedures are standard and not displayed here) that the new “effective mass” of the Sun is:
and the force of gravitation became less by the value
Then we have to find a force of light pressure that leads to such an effect. The energy of 1 photon is , its momentum is , i.e. for every photon. The force of pressure is – the change of the moment of the system sail-probe due to all photons that fall to the sail in one time unit. According to the law of conservation of momentum is equal to the sum of varying of moment of all photons that came to the sail: . Since the sail is of the mirror-type the photons are reflected and change the moment to the opposite value, that is the change of the momentum of each of them . Thus,
Taking into account that the energy of the photons that fall in a unit of time to the sail remote to a distance R from the Sun is:
we can write,
This value is equal to part of gravitation, so:
It is easy to find (by using equations of the circular orbit of Earth rotation around the Sun) that , where is a sidereal period of the Earth. Thus,
Not very much.
Then let us estimate the thickness of this sail. The mass of the sail is , . It is reasonable to propose that the sail has mirror characteristics due to the metallic substance. It may give us the interval of possible density of the substance : from kg/m³ till kg/m³. Let us take the density of aluminum kg/m³ for an estimate. It is evident that the mass of the sail is a part of the mentioned 1 ton of the probe-system. Let us take a half of this value for an estimation, kg. So:
This value can be reached by the modern techniques.
Note for jury: The correct answers are in interval from 0.1 till 1.5 mkm.
Data
Data from the table of planetary data may be used for solving every problem.
