The archive PDF contains questions and inline official answers. The Hyades photograph is already annotated; no unannotated version or Hyades-stars.txt is present in the complete 19-entry year catalogue. All 35 input rows are printed in Question 4 and also supplied in DataHyades.xlsx. Source formula/numbering defects are retained: duplicate solution step 4 in Question 1, Figure 2/Figure 5 references, missing range dash for star 10, and incorrect right-ascension conversion in Question 4 and workbook. The workbook filters differences less than 10 rather than absolute differences. The reference star list also has printed value differences between its tables.

1.

In a Text file (Hyades-stars.txt) you are given a list of 35 stars from the field of the Hyades open cluster, observed by the Hipparcos space telescope.

The information listed in the columns of the text file for each of the 35 stars is: (a) The Hipparcos catalogue number (HIP). (b) Their right ascension (alpha – α\alpha) [h m s]. (c) Their declination (delta – dd) [° ′ ″]. (d) Their trigonometric parallax (p – π\pi) [′′×103^{\prime\prime}\times10^3]. (e) Their proper motion in right ascension multiplied by cos⁡d\cos d (mu_axcosd – μα×cos⁡d\mu_\alpha\times\cos d) [′′×103/yr^{\prime\prime}\times10^3/\mathrm{yr}]. (f) Their proper motion in declination (mu_d – μd\mu_d) [′′×103/yr^{\prime\prime}\times10^3/\mathrm{yr}]. (g) Their radial velocity (v_r – vrv_r) [km/s].

2.

Convert the coordinates in degrees (with 4 decimal points).

3.

Calculate the angular distance, φ\varphi, between each of the stars and the point of convergence, which is at (αc=6h7m\alpha_c=6^h7^m, δc=+6∘56′\delta_c=+6^\circ56^\prime).

4.

Calculate the proper motion of each star, μ\mu [′′/yr^{\prime\prime}/\mathrm{yr}], using μαcos⁡δ\mu_\alpha\cos\delta and μδ\mu_\delta given in the list.

5.

Use the above data to calculate the distance, rμr_\mu, for each star using the following equation:

rμ=vrtan⁡φ4.74047μr_\mu=\frac{v_r\tan\varphi}{4.74047\mu}

where rμr_\mu is the distance of the star in parsecs, vrv_r is the radial velocity of the star in km/sec, φ\varphi is the angular distance between the star and the point of convergence that you have already estimated in step 3, while μ\mu is the total proper motion estimated in step 4. Do all stars belong to the Hyades cluster? You can assume that any stars whose distance from the centre of the cluster (rμ=46.34 pcr_\mu=46.34\,\mathrm{pc}) is larger than 10 pc, are not part of the cluster.

6.

Independently, calculate the distance, rπr_\pi, of each star in the list using the trigonometric parallax angle, π\pi.

7.

Find the average distance of the Hyades cluster, rμ‾\overline{r_\mu} and rπ‾\overline{r_\pi}, and its standard deviation, σμ\sigma_\mu and σπ\sigma_\pi, for each method (moving cluster and trigonometric parallax methods).

8.

Which method is more accurate: (i) the moving cluster method, (ii) the trigonometric parallax method? Please answer with (i) or (ii).
