IYPT 1989, Задачи на турнира — Задача 4. Rolling friction

Problems for the 2nd International Young Physicists’ Tournament

Внимание: Бележка към темата

The original header prints 1988, although this is the 2nd IYPT problem set for 1989; the edition’s note [1] and its bibliography identify the 1989 event. The printed header is retained.

Translated, edited and commented by Ilya Martchenko. The original edition’s historical notes, sources and acknowledgments are retained with problem 1.

Епиграф

Squamps are hunted from the inside only.

Условие

Investigate how the friction force depends on speed. To be more specific, consider the rolling of a wooden puck on wood (a wooden surface of a table.)

Note [8]

A different problem at the Correspondence Round [Kvant 1988]: “Puddle and wind. Measure the parameters of the waves that are excited by wind in a shallow basin. Investigate the dependence of wavelength on the speed of wind.” In [Jordens 1989], the problem reads: “The puddle and the wind. Determine the parameters of the waves caused in a puddle by the wind. Study the dependence of the wave length on wind speed”
