Условие

This problem has two parts.

A. Determining the radius of curvature of a planar curve by means of Mechanics (4,5 т.)

Each infinitesimal length element of a curve can be thought as belonging to a circle with a certain radius (see Figure 1). This radius is called the radius of curvature. In order to determine the radius of curvature at some point of a planar curve, one can consider that the curve is the trajectory of a point-like object, and that the given point is the very object.

Let y=f(x)y = f(x) be the equation of the curve, where xx and yy are the coordinates of the object.

a. Express the components vxv_x and vyv_y of the velocity of the object in terms of xx and its time derivatives, and f(x)f(x) and its derivatives. [1 т.]

b. Let ata_\mathrm{t} be the component of the acceleration vector parallel to the velocity. Express vector a⃗t\vec{a}_\mathrm{t} in terms of vxv_x, vyv_y, the components axa_x and aya_y of the acceleration, and the unit vectors i⃗\vec{i} and j⃗\vec{j} of the Oxx and Oyy axes. [1 т.]

c. Express the magnitude (i.e. the absolute value) of the component a⃗n\vec{a}_\mathrm{n} of the acceleration perpendicular to the velocity, in terms of vxv_x, vyv_y, axa_x and aya_y. [1 т.]

d. Express the radius of curvature in terms of f(x)f(x) and its derivatives. [0,5 т.]

e. Find the radius of curvature of the parabola y=Ax2y = Ax^2 (A>0A > 0) at a point having coordinate x=x0x = x_0. [0,5 т.]

f. Find the period of small oscillations performed by a bead on the bottom of a smooth surface of equation y=sin⁡2xy = \sin 2x [m]. You may use g≈π2g \approx \pi^2 [m/s2^2], where gg is the gravitational acceleration. [0,5 т.]

B. Springs on a circle (5,5 т.)

In this problem we will investigate the motion of a point-like object of mass mm connected to N+1N + 1 springs of stiffness kk. The springs are attached to a circle of radius RR (see Figure 2) and have negligible natural length. The points to which the springs are attached are arranged uniformly on the circle such that, when the object is at the center of the circle, the angle between two adjacent springs is equal to 2π/(N+1)2\pi/(N+1). We label the springs 0 through NN.

Let angle α\alpha and the radial coordinate rr of the object be defined as in Figure 3. The object can move in the plane of the circle and we ignore the effects of gravity throughout the problem.

A circle of radius R with a point mass m at its centre connected by zigzag springs to points on the circle labelled 0, 1, 2, …, n, …, N; the angles between adjacent springs are marked 2π/(N+1).

g. Compute the length lnl_n of the nn-th spring for arbitrary rr and α\alpha. [0,5 т.]

h. Write down the kinetic energy EkinE_\mathrm{kin} and the potential energy EpotE_\mathrm{pot} of the object in terms of rr, α\alpha, and their time derivatives. (Do not evaluate the sum in the potential energy just yet.) [0,5 т.]

i. Compute the sums

∑n=0Ncos⁡(2nπN+1)and∑n=0Nsin⁡(2nπN+1)\sum_{n=0}^{N}\cos\left(\frac{2n\pi}{N+1}\right) \quad \text{and} \quad \sum_{n=0}^{N}\sin\left(\frac{2n\pi}{N+1}\right)

and use the results to evaluate EpotE_\mathrm{pot} for arbitrary NN. [0,5 т.]

j. Show that the angular momentum LL is conserved. [0,5 т.]

k. Write down the implicit equation for rr in terms of L≡L/m\mathcal{L} \equiv L/m and ω2≡(N+1)k/m\omega^2 \equiv (N+1)k/m. [0,5 т.]

l. Perform the substitution

r(t)=z2(t)+K,r(t) = \sqrt{z^2(t)+K},

with KK an unspecified parameter, and obtain the equation “of motion” for z(t)z(t). [0,5 т.]

Perhaps surprisingly, this equation admits oscillatory solutions z(t)=Acos⁡(ωt+ϕ0)z(t) = A\cos(\omega t+\phi_0).

m. Show this, and determine AA in terms of L\mathcal{L}, KK, and ω\omega. [0,5 т.]

KK and ϕ0\phi_0 can be thought of as integration constants to be specified by the initial conditions. Since the equation of motion is second order, and we have two integration constants, it means that this is the most general function describing the distance r(t)r(t). On the other hand, one can notice that the equation for r(t)r(t) remains unchanged on substituting rr with −r-r. Physically this is the same as substituting α\alpha with α+π\alpha + \pi, which means that the distance from the center of the circle to the object is the same in any two opposing directions.

n. Write down r(t)r(t) in terms of L\mathcal{L}, ω\omega, KK and ϕ0\phi_0. Is r(t)r(t) periodic? Is the motion periodic? Do they both have the same period? [0,5 т.]

o. Describe the motion of the object when L=0L = 0. [0,5 т.]

p. Find out the possible value of rr at which the object could perform circular uniform motion. [0,5 т.]

Suppose now we remove the springs labeled 0, dd, 2d2d, … , where dd divides N+1N + 1.

q. Argue that r(t)r(t) derived in part n. continues to hold, but for a different value of ω\omega. What is this new value ω′\omega' in terms of ω\omega, NN, and dd? [0,5 т.]
