GeCAA Selection Test Structured Question Paper · 9 т.
Условие
The tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa at 828 m tall. During the holy month of Ramadan, observing Muslims will fast from the time between Sunrise and Sunset. Due to the height of the Burj Khalifa, people at the top will fast for a longer period than people at the bottom.
For simplicity, suppose it is March 21 2025.
a Calculate the time that a person at the top of Burj Khalifa will fast for on this day. [6 т.]
b What is the extra amount of time (to the nearest second) that a person at the top of Burj Khalifa will fast for, as compared to a person on the ground? [3 т.]
Burj Khalifa Coordinates: 25.1972° N, 55.2744° E.
You are to account for atmospheric refraction with a value of 32’.
Hint: The Sun is not a point source.

We start by finding the angular radius of the Sun:
M0.5
Where is the radius of the Sun and is the distance to the Sun.
Next, we find the additional angle of depression the people at the top of the Burj Khalifa will have to see the new apparent horizon.
M0.5
Where is the radius of the Earth and is the height of the Burj Khalifa.
There is also a horizon depression due to atmospheric refraction:
Finally, we draw our spherical triangles. It is much simpler because this is the Vernal Equinox, so the Sun’s path coincides with the Celestial Equator.

Using the labels in the diagram, we get the following:
M2
The distance the sun has travelled across above the depressed horizon is . Hence:
M1
M1 A1

The difference in sunset timing is due to the extra distance the Sun has to travel. In other words, . Since this is symmetric for both sunrise and sunset, the extra fasting time is due to the sun travelling double that distance.
Plugging in the values, we get:
