Условие
The Balmer-, H-I, and Lyman- lines are important spectral lines in astronomy, all from hydrogen.
- The Balmer- line occurs when an electron in a hydrogen atom goes from the state to .
- The H-I line occurs from an electron in the 1s shell of a hydrogen atom undergoing a spin-flip transition between two hyperfine levels.
- The Lyman- line is the emission line that occurs when an electron in a hydrogen atom goes from to .
Order these lines from the shortest to longest wavelength.
(a) Balmer-, H-I, Lyman-
(b) H-I, Balmer-, Lyman-
(c) Lyman-, H-I, Balmer-
(d) Lyman-, Balmer-, H-I
(e) Balmer-, Lyman-, H-I

Solution: Without prior knowledge of these lines, one can determine that the Lyman- line has a shorter wavelength than the Balmer- line using the Rydberg equation:
Since is greater than , the transition from to will have a smaller wavelength than to .
The H-I line comes from an energy difference between two hyperfine levels in the same orbital, while the Lyman- and Balmer- lines come from transitions between two orbitals, so the H-I line will have less energy, and thus a longer wavelength, than both of the other lines.
Of course, one can also determine the answer directly if they already know which parts of the electromagnetic spectrum each line is in (Lyman- is ultraviolet, Balmer- is visible, and H-I is in the microwave range).
Answer: D
