USAPhO 1999, Четвъртфинал — Задача 3
Preliminary Exam · Open Response Questions
Solutions to Problems
Any correct, equivalent solution should be awarded proportionate points. You may further break down the listed points into one point increments. Students should not be penalized in a subsequent part for using the wrong answer to a previous part. (No double jeopardy.)
Условие
Two masses, and , attached to equal length massless strings, are hanging side-by-side just in contact with each other. Mass is swung out to the side to a point having a vertical displacement above mass . It is then released from rest and collides elastically with the stationary hanging mass . Each of the masses is observed to rise to the same height following the collision.
a. Find the numerical value of this height. [20 т.]
b. The masses swing back down and undergo a second elastic collision. Describe what happens following the second collision. (A proof is not required.) [5 т.]

- a. 0.05 m
- b. After the second collision m₂ stops and m₁ reaches the maximum height hᵢ = 0.20 m.

Since both masses rise to the same height after the collision, they must have equal speeds after the collision [3]
Since the collision is elastic, the total kinetic energy is unchanged [2]
