INSTRUCTIONS

DO NOT OPEN THIS TEST UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO BEGIN

  • Work Part A first. You have 90 minutes to complete all four problems.

  • After you have completed Part A, you may take a break.

  • Then work Part B. You have 90 minutes to complete both problems.

  • Show all your work. Partial credit will be given.

  • Start each question on a new sheet of paper. Be sure to put your name in the upper right-hand corner of each page, along with the question number and the page number/total pages for this problem. For example,

    Doe, Jamie

    A1 – 1/3

  • A hand-held calculator may be used. Its memory must be cleared of data and programs. It may not be used in graphing mode. Calculators may not be shared. You may not use any tables, books, or collections of formulas. You may use a ruler or straight edge.

  • Questions with the same point value are not necessarily of the same difficulty.

  • Good luck!

Условие

Two diagrams of a semicircular hoop resting on a horizontal line. Left: the hoop in equilibrium, with a radius arrow labelled R from the center of curvature to the hoop and a vertical arrow labelled 2R/π from the center of curvature down to a cross marked cm. Right: the hoop tilted, touching the line at a point below the center of curvature, with the radius arrow R, a vertical line from the center of curvature to the contact point, and a tilted arrow 2R/π to the cross marked cm.

A thin semicircular hoop of radius RR and mass mm rocks back and forth without slipping on a rough surface. The center-of-mass of this hoop lies a distance 2R/π2R/\pi below its center of curvature when it is in its equilibrium position. See diagrams above.

a. What is the semicircular hoop’s moment of inertia about its center of mass? [10 т.]

b. Find Tno slipT_{\mathrm{no\ slip}} the period of oscillation for small amplitude oscillations. Ignore all terms higher than first order in the oscillation angle θ\theta. [20 т.]

c. The hoop now undergoes oscillations on a frictionless surface with the period of oscillation TslipT_{\mathrm{slip}}. Ignore all terms higher than first order in the oscillation angle θ\theta. Find the ratio of TslipT_{\mathrm{slip}} to Tno slipT_{\mathrm{no\ slip}}. [20 т.]
