The four problems are printed in French and English; both source versions appear below. In Problem 2, question 8, French prints c1=2,502J.K−1.kg−1c_1=2{,}50^2J.K^{-1}.kg^{-1}, whereas English prints c1=2,50×102J.K−1.kg−1c_1=2{,}50\times10^2J.K^{-1}.kg^{-1}. Both printed forms are retained. No matching official solution or marking scheme was found in the archive catalogue or the competition’s Phys directory.

10. Application numérique : que se passe-t-il si vA=7,0m.s−1v_A = 7{,}0m.s^{-1} ?

Part II — English

A block of ice of mass m=5,0kgm=5{,}0kg and center of mass MM is launched on a track consisting of, firstly, a rectangular ramp ABAB tilted at an angle α=30∘\alpha=30^\circ with respect to the horizontal, and secondly, a circular part BCBC of radius R=2,0mR=2{,}0m and angle (OC→;OB→^)=π2+α(\widehat{\overrightarrow{OC};\overrightarrow{OB}})=\frac{\pi}{2}+\alpha (see the figure). The trampoline is designed so that the triangle AOBAOB has right angle at BB (so the ramp is tangent to the circle at BB). At moment t=0t=0, the ice is launched from AA with velocity v⃗A\vec v_A, then it slides without friction on the track. Assume that the movement happens in the plane OxzOxz and we define the associated cartesian system (u⃗x,u⃗z)(\vec u_x,\vec u_z). We denote g=9,8m.s−2g=9{,}8m.s^{-2} the gravitational acceleration. The reference frame is the one of the laboratory and it is considered to be Galilean (inertial).

Track AB–BC with initial velocity, coordinate axes and angular labels.

1. Determine the expression of the velocity v⃗(t)\vec v(t) at moment tt on the ramp as a function of the given data, in the basis (u⃗x,u⃗z)(\vec u_x,\vec u_z).

2. Show that the point BB is reached only if the norm vAv_A of v⃗A\vec v_A is larger than a given value vℓv_\ell. Express vℓv_\ell and calculate its numerical value.

For the next questions, we assume that the previous condition is verified.

3. Express the moment tBt_B when the ice reaches the point BB.

4. Express the norm vBv_B of the velocity at point BB.

We are now interested in the phase of movement on the arc BCBC. The position of MM is defined by the angle θ=(u⃗z;OM→^)\theta=(\widehat{\vec u_z;\overrightarrow{OM}}). We work in the polar basis given by the vectors OM→=Ru⃗r\overrightarrow{OM}=R\vec u_r and u⃗θ\vec u_\theta directed along increasing values of θ\theta (i.e. clockwise).

5. Make a diagram with the forces acting on the ice, then project them along the vectors u⃗r\vec u_r and u⃗θ\vec u_\theta so as to obtain two scalar equations.

6. Show that the following expression of the angular velocity satisfies the equations of motion already established in the previous question θ˙2=−2gR⋅cos(θ)+Const\dot\theta^2=-\frac{2g}{R}\cdot cos(\theta)+Const. Express the constant in terms of known parameters.

7. Deduce the expression of the normal reaction N⃗\vec N of the support as a function of θ,m,g,R,vB\theta,m,g,R,v_B and α\alpha.

8. Under what condition on vBv_B, and then on vAv_A, there won’t be a take-off before the summit of the track? Calculate the respective numerical values.

9. Determine the expression of the position θd\theta_d, the value of θ\theta for which the ice leaves the track.

10. Numerical application: what happens if vA=7,0m.s−1v_A=7{,}0m.s^{-1}?
