The four problems are printed in French and English; both source versions appear below. In Problem 2, question 8, French prints c1=2,502J.K−1.kg−1c_1=2{,}50^2J.K^{-1}.kg^{-1}, whereas English prints c1=2,50×102J.K−1.kg−1c_1=2{,}50\times10^2J.K^{-1}.kg^{-1}. Both printed forms are retained. No matching official solution or marking scheme was found in the archive catalogue or the competition’s Phys directory.

Условие

8. Calculer Δtmin\Delta t_{min} pour c1=2,502J.K−1.kg−1c_1 = 2{,}50^2J.K^{-1}.kg^{-1}, T0=300KT_0 = 300K, Tfus=900KT_{fus} = 900K, ℓ1=1,00×105J.kg−1\ell_1 = 1{,}00 \times 10^5J.kg^{-1}, P0=14,0mW\mathcal{P}_0 = 14{,}0mW, h1=1,00μmh1 = 1{,}00\mu m, r0=0,550μmr_0 = 0{,}550\mu m, μ1=3,00×103kg.m−3\mu_1 = 3{,}00 \times 10^3kg.m^{-3}.

Part II — English

We consider CD-RW (“rewritable”) discs, i.e. on which it is possible to save information, as well as to delete it. The disc structure is as follows: a layer of photosensitive material (composed of silver, indium, antimony, tellurium) is inserted between the metal reflecting layer and the polycarbonate layer. This photosensitive material has two allotropic forms (one speaks of “polymorphism”): one of them is polycrystalline and transparent, the other one is amorphous and opaque. If one melts the photosensitive polycrystalline layer in a short lapse of time, it takes the amorphous form upon cooling. It is the “writing” process. The “deletion” is obtained by heating less intensively, but for a longer period of time. This process brings the photosensitive layer to its polycrystalline phase. We will be interested only in the writing process.

Let h1h_1 denote the thickness of the photosensitive layer, c1c_1—its specific heat capacity, μ1\mu_1—its density, and ℓ1\ell_1—its specific enthalpy of fusion. Its melting temperature is denoted TmeltT_{melt}.

HINT: The enthalpy of fusion is the energy, typically heat, required by a given quantity of a substance to change its state from a solid to a liquid, at constant pressure and temperature.

Biphasic systems

1. What is the particularity of a biphasic mixture of a pure substance at fixed pressure PP?

2. How does one call the transitions liquid →\rightarrow vapour and solid →\rightarrow vapour?

3. Draw the shape of the (P,v)(P,v) diagram of a pure substance for the transition liquid-vapour, vv representing the specific volume. Plot one or several isotherms and specify the domains of pure liquid, liquid-vapour equilibrium and dry vapour.

Evolution of the maximal writing speed

The shape of the writing laser beam is approximated by a circular cylinder of radius r0r_0, with axis orthogonal to the disc surface. The thermal power transferred by the laser to the photosensitive layer is denoted P0\mathcal P_0. It is assumed uniformly distributed over the beam section. The laser operates at stationary regime. At first the disc is immobile.

4. Express the mass m1m_1 of photosensitive material receiving laser light as a function of the problem parameters.

5. Express the heat transfer Q1Q_1 needed for a mass m1m_1 of photosensitive material to heat up from room temperature T0T_0 to the melting temperature TmeltT_{melt} without changing state?

6. Express the heat transfer Q2Q_2 needed for a mass m1m_1 to melt completely, at constant temperature equal to TmeltT_{melt}?

7. We assume that the laser’s power is completely absorbed by the photosensitive layer. Express in terms of the problem parameters the minimal lapse of time Δtmin\Delta t_{min} during which one needs to illuminate the disc at rest, in order to heat and melt down entirely the zone of the photosensitive layer located under the light beam?

8. Calculate Δtmin\Delta t_{min} for c1=2,50×102J.K−1.kg−1c_1=2{,}50\times10^2J.K^{-1}.kg^{-1}, T0=300KT_0=300K, Tmelt=900KT_{melt}=900K, ℓ1=1,00×105J.kg−1\ell_1=1{,}00\times10^5J.kg^{-1}, P0=14,0mW\mathcal P_0=14{,}0mW, h1=1,00μmh_1=1{,}00\mu m, r0=0,550μmr_0=0{,}550\mu m, μ1=3,00×103kg.m−3\mu_1=3{,}00\times10^3kg.m^{-3}.

Currently, the opaque disc is set to rotate so that the CD-RW track runs at constant linear speed v1v_1 in front of the laser beam.

9. What is the surface dSdS swept on the optical disc by the laser beam during time dtdt?

10. What is the mass dmdm of the photosensitive material, which the laser must heat from the ambient temperature T0T_0 to the temperature TmeltT_{melt} and then melt in time dtdt?

11. Deduce the expression of the maximal speed v1,maxv_{1,max} of writing of CD-RW from the power P0\mathcal P_0 of the laser.

12. Compute v1,maxv_{1,max} for the numerical values given in question 8.
