r⃗(t)=τ(v0⃗−τg⃗)(1−e−tτ)+τg⃗t(1)\vec{r}(t) = \tau(\vec{v_0} - \tau\vec{g})(1 - e^{-\frac{t}{\tau}}) + \tau\vec{g}t \qquad (1)

et projéter cette expression selon les trois axes principals. On note τ=mλ\tau = \frac{m}{\lambda}

On a :

ddt(fg)=dfdtg+fdgdt\frac{d}{dt}(fg) = \frac{df}{dt}g + f\frac{dg}{dt} et ddt(f+g)=ddtf+ddtg\frac{d}{dt}(f + g) = \frac{d}{dt}f + \frac{d}{dt}g

ddt(ect)=c⋅ect\frac{d}{dt}(e^{ct}) = c \cdot e^{ct} et ddt(c⋅tn)=nc⋅tn−1\frac{d}{dt}(c \cdot t^n) = nc \cdot t^{n-1}

17. Obtenir l'expression de zobus(t)z_{obus}(t) sachant que T′>t1′+τoT' > t_1' + \tau_o.

18. Etablir une équation de t1′t_1' et la résoudre.

Part II — English: Problem I. Interception of a ballistic missile (7 pts)

A ballistic missile, considered to be a point MM of mass mm, is launched at the instant t=0t=0 from the point OO with initial velocity v⃗0\vec v_0, at an angle α\alpha with the horizontal plane OxyOxy. The movement of the missile is limited to the vertical plane OxzOxz. The frame of reference RR is considered to be inertial and its associated coordinate system is (O,u⃗x,u⃗y,u⃗z)(O,\vec u_x,\vec u_y,\vec u_z). We note g⃗=−gu⃗z\vec g=-g\vec u_z the gravitational acceleration and r⃗=(x,y,z)\vec r=(x,y,z) the position vector of MM.

Modelisation in the absence of drag

We neglect all effects of air drag. The only force taken into account is the gravitational one.

1. Determine the expressions of x(t),y(t),z(t)x(t),y(t),z(t) - the coordinates of point MM, as a function of the constants of the problem.

2. Deduce the trajectory equation of point MM in the form z=f(x)z=f(x).

3. Find the range PP and the maximal altitude hmaxh_{max} of the missile. We measure those quantities from the launch altitude z0=0z_0=0.

4. For what value of α\alpha the range PP is maximal? What is the maximal range PmaxP_{max}?

We wish to intercept the missile during flight. We thus launch without initial velocity at the instant t1t_1 (such that t1>0t_1>0) a shell, which is a bait, from the point N0N_0 with coordinates (x0,z0)(x_0,z_0). We consider this shell to be a material point NN of mass m′m' and its position is given by r⃗′=(x′,y′,z′)\vec r'=(x',y',z'). We are interested in the instant t1t_1 at which we should launch the shell in order to intercept the missile at the instant TT as a function of the initial position N0N_0, supposed to be known.

5. Determine the expressions x′(t),y′(t),z′(t)x'(t),y'(t),z'(t) giving the position of the shell.

6. Deduce at which instant TT the interception takes place.

7. Deduce a second degree equation for t1t_1, which represents the intersection of the two trajectories. Write it down as a function of the problem's parameters.

8. What condition should be satisfied in order for this equation to have a solution? Where should the point N0N_0 be situated to fulfil this condition? Make a diagram to illustrate it.

9. Determine at what instant t1t_1 the shell should be launched in order to achieve a successful interception. Write down the result as a function of TT and other parameters of the problem. Show that the position of N0N_0 should satisfy a second condition. Why is that and what is the condition? Make a diagram showing the possible launch positions (the drop zone) for the shell.

10. Suppose the initial position of the shell (x0,z0)(x_0,z_0), given in reference to the missile, is known with relative precision of 0.01%0.01\%. The velocity components are each known within 0.1%0.1\% accuracy. Deduce the relative uncertainty when calculating the instant TT. Calculate its numerical value.

Modelisation with drag

It is actually necessary to take into account the air drag forces acting upon both the missile and the shell. Considering the aerodynamic profile of the missile, we are going to assume linear drag force acting upon it: therefore the air is acting with the following force on the missile F⃗tr=−λv⃗\vec F_{tr}=-\lambda\vec v, where λ>0\lambda>0 is the linear drag coefficient. However, the shell having less aerodynamic shape, we launch it vertically this time with initial velocity v⃗0′=−v0′u⃗z\vec v'_0=-v'_0\vec u_z and we are going to assume the drag force to be quadratic and taking the following form F⃗trq=−kv′v⃗′\vec F_{trq}=-kv'\vec v', where v⃗′=−v′u⃗z\vec v'=-v'\vec u_z is the velocity of the shell (v′>0v'>0) and k>0k>0 is the quadratic drag coefficient.

11. Determine the dimensions and the units of both drag coefficients λ\lambda and kk.

12. Make a diagram showing the forces acting upon the missile. Write down Newton's law of motion for the missile.

13. Find the solution to the equation established in the previous question. Check that r⃗(t)\vec r(t) takes the following form:

r⃗(t)=τ(v⃗0−τg⃗)(1−e−t/τ)+τg⃗ t(4)\vec r(t)=\tau(\vec v_0-\tau\vec g)(1-e^{-t/\tau})+\tau\vec g\,t\qquad(4)

and deduce the projections along the three principal axes. We note τ=mλ\tau=\frac m\lambda

HINT: To solve this question it would be helpful to know how to calculate derivatives. We thus give you the necessary "rules":

The velocity is the derivative of the position and the acceleration is the derivative of the velocity: v⃗=ddtr⃗\vec v=\frac d{dt}\vec r and a⃗=ddtv⃗\vec a=\frac d{dt}\vec v where we note the derivative with respect to time with ddt\frac d{dt}

Let ff and gg be two functions of the variable tt. We have:

ddt(fg)=dfdtg+fdgdt\frac d{dt}(fg)=\frac{df}{dt}g+f\frac{dg}{dt} and ddt(f+g)=ddtf+ddtg\frac d{dt}(f+g)=\frac d{dt}f+\frac d{dt}g

We also give you the derivatives of some functions that are going to be useful:

ddt(ect)=c⋅ect\frac d{dt}(e^{ct})=c\cdot e^{ct} et ddt(c⋅tn)=nc⋅tn−1\frac d{dt}(c\cdot t^n)=nc\cdot t^{n-1}

In order to answer the previous question it is sufficient to check that the given expression of r⃗\vec r satisfies the established equation.

14. Determine the new expression of the instant of interception T′T'. You can use the expression of r⃗(t)\vec r(t) given in the previous question, even if you have not obtained it yourself.

15. Establish the differential equation that v′v' obeys, where v′v' is the velocity of the shell. Show that this equation allows for a maximal limiting velocity vl′v'_l and give its expression as a function of the parameters of the problem. Deduce the characteristic time of the problem τo\tau_o from the established equation.

To simplify the problem we suppose that the velocity of the shell varies in a linear fashion until it reaches the maximal limiting velocity, which it does after accelerating for a duration τo\tau_o and afterwards it stays constant.

16. Comment on the validity of this model. Trace a graph showing the evolution of v⃗′\vec v' as a function of time.

17. Obtain the expression zshell(t)z_{shell}(t), knowing that T′>t1′+τoT'>t'_1+\tau_o.

18. Establish the equation determining t1′t'_1 and solve it.
