3. Une balançoire

Concours Général de Physique «Minko Balkanski» · 14 · 7 т.

Условие

θ(t)=e−C2mL2t(Acos⁡(Ωt)+Bsin⁡(Ωt))(3)\theta(t) = e^{-\frac{C}{2mL^2}t}(A\cos(\Omega t) + B\sin(\Omega t)) \qquad (3)

On a :

ddt(fg)=dfdtg+fdgdt\frac{d}{dt}(fg) = \frac{df}{dt}g + f\frac{dg}{dt} et ddt(f+g)=ddtf+ddtg\frac{d}{dt}(f + g) = \frac{d}{dt}f + \frac{d}{dt}g

ddt(ect)=c⋅ect\frac{d}{dt}(e^{ct}) = c \cdot e^{ct} et ddt(sin⁡(At))=Acos⁡(At)\frac{d}{dt}(\sin(At)) = A\cos(At), ddt(cos⁡(At)=−Asin⁡(At)\frac{d}{dt}(\cos(At) = -A\sin(At)

Part II — English: Problem III. A swing (7 pts)

A child on a swing is considered to be a point MM of mass mm, suspended from point OO by a rigid rod of negligible mass and length ll. The gravitational acceleration g⃗\vec g is supposed to be uniform.

Furthermore, we suppose the movement of the child to be in a plane. The angle between the vertical and the rigid rod is called θ\theta. The unitary vectors u⃗r;u⃗θ;u⃗z=u⃗r∧u⃗θ\vec u_r;\vec u_\theta;\vec u_z=\vec u_r\wedge\vec u_\theta, form an orthonormal right-hand triad.

Original swing drawing in the English edition; complete child, rod, dashed vertical, oscillation arrow and hatched supports.

Study of the child's movement in the absence of drag

In this part of the problem, all friction between the rod and the axis of rotation and all drag due to air resistance, are neglected.

1. What condition on the duration of the experiment should be true in order for the reference system to be considered as inertial? Give an order of magnitude. We suppose this condition to be met in the rest of the problem.

2. Establish the differential equation of movement for θ(t)\theta(t) (the equation that connects the angular acceleration and the angle θ(t)\theta(t)), using a method of your choosing.

3. Under what condition the child on the swing will be a harmonic oscillator? Give the expression of the corresponding angular frequency ω0\omega_0.

4. Express the maximal velocity vmaxv_{max} achieved by the child in those conditions as a function of ll, ω0\omega_0 and θmax\theta_{max}.

5. Numerical application: the child starts off from an angle θ0=30∘\theta_0=30^\circ without initial velocity. Calculate the period of oscillations T0T_0 and the maximal velocity vmaxv_{max}, given that l=2.5ml=2.5m, g=10m.s−2g=10m.s^{-2} and m=20kgm=20kg.

Case of linear friction force

There is some friction at the pivot point OO where the rod is attached. We model this phenomenon by adding a torque (or a moment of force) accounting for this friction. The torque with respect to OO is given by Γ⃗f=−Cdθdt.u⃗z\vec\Gamma_f=-C\frac{d\theta}{dt}.\vec u_z where CC is a positive constant and dθdt\frac{d\theta}{dt} is the derivative of θ(t)\theta(t) with respect to time, which is the angular velocity ω(t)\omega(t).

6. Express the units of CC in terms of SI (Système International) units.

7. Establish the differential equation that governs the behaviour of θ(t)\theta(t). Suppose that the experimental conditions allow us to use the small angles approximation and rewrite the equation using it.

HINT: Small angles approximation: sin⁡(θ)≈θ\sin(\theta)\approx\theta

8. Given that at the initial moment θ=θ0\theta=\theta_0 and the swing has no initial velocity, check that θ(t)\theta(t) in the following form satisfies the differential equation:

θ(t)=e−C2mL2t(Acos⁡(Ωt)+Bsin⁡(Ωt))(6)\theta(t)=e^{-\frac C{2mL^2}t}(A\cos(\Omega t)+B\sin(\Omega t))\qquad(6)

where Ω=gL−C24m2L4\Omega=\sqrt{\frac gL-\frac{C^2}{4m^2L^4}}. Find AA et BB.

HINT: We remind you of the "rules" of taking derivatives:

We note the derivative with respect to time by ddt\frac d{dt}.

Let ff and gg be two functions of the variable tt. We have:

ddt(fg)=dfdtg+fdgdt\frac d{dt}(fg)=\frac{df}{dt}g+f\frac{dg}{dt} and ddt(f+g)=ddtf+ddtg\frac d{dt}(f+g)=\frac d{dt}f+\frac d{dt}g

We also give you the derivatives of some functions that might be useful:

ddt(ect)=c⋅ect\frac d{dt}(e^{ct})=c\cdot e^{ct} and ddt(sin⁡(At))=Acos⁡(At)\frac d{dt}(\sin(At))=A\cos(At), ddt(cos⁡(At)=−Asin⁡(At)\frac d{dt}(\cos(At)=-A\sin(At)

9. What inequality should CC satisfy in order for the movement of the child to be considered pseudo-periodic?

10. Under what condition can we approximate the pseudo-period with the period found earlier T0T_0?

11. Numerical application: Consider this condition to be met, we suppose that θ=30∘\theta=30^\circ. We make the observation that the amplitude of the movement is reduced in half over 20 oscillations. Calculate the value of the constant CC.

The friction is slowing down the swing and so a second child comes to help the first one by pushing the swing with a horizontal force, which is periodic, but not harmonic, and the 2nd child is compensating the effects of friction, so it tries to keep the maximal angle reached by the swing the same. This force is applied over a short period of time and is constant over that duration.

12. At which instant and at what frequency should the 2nd child apply its force, in order to be most efficient? What is the period TT of that force F(t)F(t)?

Suppose that the force is applied over a sufficiently small duration and the friction is weak enough so we can assume θ(t)\theta(t) is following a sinusoidal evolution of angular frequency ω0\omega_0 and amplitude θ0\theta_0.

13. Determine the average power dissipated by the friction as a function of CC, ω0\omega_0 the angular frequency of the movement and θ0\theta_0 - the amplitude of the movement.

14. Numerical application: Deduce the amount of work the 2nd child has to generate over 20 oscillations.

Make the swing rise on our own (EXTRA pts)

A way of making the swing rise is the following: the child stays seated and slightly moves its body back and forth, while simultaneously folding and expanding its legs to make its center of mass move up or down.

We neglect the air drag (meaning C=0C=0) and, as before, we consider the mass of the swing to be negligible.

Explain, using diagrams, how precisely the child should move in order to make the swing rise and accelerate. Explain where the energy to rise the swing comes from. Model the movement of the child and find the equation that governs the behaviour of the swing. Solve it or make an analogy with a well known physics phenomenon. Comment on the validity and limitations of our model.
