Бележки от източника
The supplied key refers to a drawing for problem 2 but contains none. The B4 key prints “5 parameters” before concluding 16; the printed wording is retained. The printed B5 formula V_per·a(1−e)/2 and its numerical results are retained without correction.
Условие
The “Iridium” satellites give brilliant flares due to reflection of sunlight from their highly polished main mission antennas which are highly reflective plates, each of size cm. A satellite was overhead at the time of the flare and the apparent magnitude of the flare was at the centre.
a) Draw a ray diagram and make a rough estimate of the area on ground covered by the beams from any one of the antennas.
b) Find the height of the satellite above the surface of the earth.
Решение
The drawing enables to realise that the light from the satellite actually spreads in a cone with angle , so that it covers area on the ground
Using the relation and taking into account stellar magnitude of the Sun and magnitude of the flare , we can find that , and so we see part of the Sun through the reflecting plate.
It means that the visible projection of the square of the plate cm ( m²) is part of . Projection gives some factor about which should be taken into account since as usual we see the plate under the angle of (see figure):
Taking into account that rad, one can find that km and the area on ground covered by the beams from one antenna
