IAO 2003, Теория, Група B — Задача 4
VIII International Astronomy Olympiad, Stockholm, Sweden, 2–8.10.2003 — Theoretical round. Problems to solve — Group B · 2 октомври 2003 г.
Внимание: Бележка към темата
Solutions for problems 1-3 are shared 'Group A,B' solutions as printed in the source; they were matched to the Group B problem statements which are identical in content for these three problems.
Бележка
Data from the "Table of planetary data" may be used for solving of every problem.
Условие
The Great Opposition of Mars took place this year on August 28 at 17ʰ 56ᵐ UT. The next Great Opposition of Mars will take place in summer 2018. Somebody did not understand and, instead, imagined that 2018 will be the year not for the next Great Opposition but simply next opposition. Find parameters of the orbit of such a hypothetical planet, «Mars-2», and estimate its magnitude visible from Earth during the mean opposition. Consider the orbit of «Mars-2» to be circular and its physical characteristics the same as for Mars.

Sidereal period ≈1.07 years, semi-major axis ≈1.047 a.u., magnitude at opposition ≈ -8.0ᵐ.
Решение
If the next opposition of a hypothetical «Mars-2» will be in summer 2018, it means that the synodic period of «Mars-2» is equal approximately to years. So the sidereal period of «Mars-2» may be found from the formula:
where is sidereal period of Earth,
To find semiaxis of the orbit of «Mars-2» we can use Kepler's 3rd Law:
so
Assuming that the orbit of «Mars-2» is circular, the minimum distance to Earth at opposition of this planet will be at 0.047 a.u., i.e. with an apparent size times smaller than in mean opposition of Mars when its magnitude is equal to . «Mars-2» is also closer to Sun with an apparent size times. , ! So the hypothetical «Mars-2» might be as bright as at opposition.
