Proxima Centauri.
Решение
Theoretical round. Sketches for solutions
Let us find the distance between Proxima and Alpha Centauri.
where x, y and z are projections of the distance on the axes of our coordinate system. Necessary data we should take from the “Data on some stars”. Approximately
where are right ascension, declination, distance from the Earth, parallax, and values with sub-index PC are related to Proxima Centauri; those with sub-index αC, to Alpha Centauri; and PαC, to the middle point of Proxima and Alpha Centauri. So, from the “Data on some stars”, we should take of Proxima and Alpha Centauri. Calculations give us:
Thus, in comparison with observation from the Earth, the magnitude of Proxima Centauri while observed from the vicinity of Alpha Centauri is smaller by
than the magnitude while observed from the Earth.
It is less than the limit value for naked eye, 6, so Proxima Centauri can be visible from the vicinity of Alpha Centauri by naked eye, «да-yes».
Note: To prove the proposal «нет-no» of the first question, it would not be necessary to make so many calculations of x, y, z and d. It is evident that , so if Proxima Centauri cannot be visible from the distance z, it would be also not visible from the distance d.
Theoretical round. Basic criteria
- Understanding to use formula d=(x²+y²+z²)¹ᐟ² — 1 pt.
- Correct formulae for x,y,z — 3×1 pt.
- Correct final calculation of d — 1 pt.
- Correct comparing with the magnitude as seen from Earth and result of magnitude from α Cen — 1.5 pt.
- Final comparing with 6 magnitudes and answer «да-yes» — 1.5 pt.
Note for jury and team leaders
The proposed sketches are not full; the team leaders have to give more detailed explanations for students. But the correct solutions in the students’ papers (enough for 8 pts) may be shorter.
Jury members should evaluate the student’s solutions in essence, and not by looking on formal existence the mentioned sentences or formulae. The formal presence of the mentioned positions in the text is not necessary to give the respective points. Points should be done if the following steps de facto using these positions.

Source discrepancy
the key prints 262.12° in 4.2; its printed β=48°33′ gives 262°54′ for 360°−2β. The printed angle and time are retained.
Source discrepancy
the lower-culmination line prints the same symbolic expression as the upper line, but substitutes −90°+φ+δ. The original mismatch is retained.
Source discrepancy
The printed individual grading allocations for Proxima Centauri sum to 9 points, although the general instructions describe each whole solution as sufficient for 8 points. Both the printed allocations and the 8-point whole-problem scale are retained.
