Theoretical round. Sketches for solutions
It would seem that approaching 10 times closer to an object reduces its apparent magnitude by 5 magnitudes, and so approaching times closer reduces the apparent magnitude by magnitudes. The magnitude of the Moon would be equal to ?
Would it? It turns out that in this case the Moon shines 2.3 times brighter than the Sun! In fact, this cannot happen!
Actually, the rule of reducing the magnitude by 5 when approaching the object 10 times closer is valid only for point-like objects, or objects for which the small-angle approximation is acceptable, i.e., an approach 10 times closer to the object increases the apparent solid angle by a factor of 100. Indeed, the magnitude decrease of extended objects, like the lunar disc, is related to the increase of the object’s apparent solid angle while keeping brightness unchanged.
The solid angle of the visible surface of the Moon from the Earth is
When using the small-angle approximation, approaching times closer would increase the visible area by the factor of times, and it would become 67 rad². However, this solid angle cannot be larger than the solid angle of a hemisphere, . That is, in the calculations we have overestimated the area by a factor of at least , and make an error in the magnitude of at least . Thus, the magnitude of the lunar disk cannot be less than .
More precise calculations show that when approaching 1000 times closer to the surface of the Moon (approximately from 380 thousand km to 380 km), the apparent solid angle will be
i.e. it will increase by a factor of approximately and (in this model of the same brightness of the lunar surface) the magnitude is
Theoretical round. Basic criteria
Solution: 7 pt in total, including:
- Understanding about impossibility to use approximation of point-like objects — 3 pt.
- Result approximately Ω₂/Ω₁=40000 — 2 pt.
- Formula and final calculations −12.7−2.5log(40000)≈−24.2 — 2 pt.
For any solution based on calculations in approximation of point-like objects or any answer resulting in larger than the Sun brightness, total mark (except mark for the picture) should not be larger than 1 pt for group α or 0.5 pt for group β.
Artistic picture of the Bear — 1 pt.
Официални решения и оценяване
Официалните скици на решенията и критериите са запазени на оригиналния английски език.
Note for jury and team leaders
The proposed sketches are not full; the team leaders have to give more detailed explanations for students. But the correct solutions in the students’ papers (enough for 8 pts) may be shorter.
Бележка
Jury members should evaluate the student’s solutions in essence, and not by looking on formal existence the mentioned sentences or formulae. The formal presence of the mentioned positions in the text is not necessary to give the respective points. Points should be done if the following steps de facto using these positions.

Source discrepancy
the key prints 262.12° in 4.2; its printed β=48°33′ gives 262°54′ for 360°−2β. The printed angle and time are retained.
Source discrepancy
the winter ratio is printed with (R₀−R)² in its denominator although the preceding winter distance is R₀+R and the numerical0.38 corresponds to the latter. The printed formula is retained. Calligraphic ℰ here represents the separate radiated-energy symbol used in the key.
Source discrepancy
the key switches from z=0.0035 to0.0036 while retaining1050 km/s; the latter multiplication would give1080. It also changes the moving gas from the first spectrum to the third in its prose. Both inconsistencies are retained. The “in reality” values above are statements of the2014 source.
Оценяване: Proxima Centauri
The printed Proxima Centauri allocations are 1 + 3×1 + 1 + 1.5 + 1.5 = 8 points, matching the whole-problem scale.
