IAO 2014, Теория, Група β — Задача 2. Great oppositions
XIX International Astronomy Olympiad. Theoretical round. Group β · 12 октомври 2014 г. · 8 т.
Бележка
General note. Maybe not all problems have correct questions. Some questions (maybe the main question of the problem, maybe one of the subquestions) may make no real sense. In this case you have to write in your answer (in English or Russian): «impossible situation – ситуация невозможна». Of course, this answer has to be explained numerically or logically.
Data from the tables (Planetary data, stars, constants, etc.) may be used for solving every problem.
The answers «Да-Yes» or «Нет-No» have to be written in English or Russian.
Условие
Now great oppositions of Mars happen every 15 or 17 years. To simplify colonization of Mars, to improve environmental conditions on it, and to increase the effect of the great oppositions, our civilization has conceived an ambitious project: to reduce by 6.0% the semi-major axis of this planet’s orbit, while keeping the eccentricity of the orbit unchanged. How often will the great oppositions of Mars occur in the case of the new orbit?
Решение
Official sketches for solutions. The source notes that these sketches are not full; team leaders should give more detailed explanations, while correct student solutions sufficient for 8 points may be shorter.
Solution
Reducing the by 6.0% the semi-major axis of Mars orbit changes its sidereal period:
Syndical period of new Mars may be found from formula
That is, oppositions of Mars (of any kind) will occur every 2.402 years. After 5 such cycles, the Earth and Mars return approximately to the same positions. It is the new period for repeating the great oppositions. Answer is “every 12 years”.
Note: Inaccurate data calculations (of , for example) in this problem can easily lead to incorrect results. In calculating the synodic motion of Mars the exact value of the fractional part of the period is very important.
Official grading criteria
- Correct using Kepler’s III law and finding T₁=T₀(A₁/A₀)³ᐟ²=1.713 years — 3 pt.
- Correct finding synodic period ~2.4 years — 2 pt.
- Understanding that the great opposition is one of five, and result 12 years — 3 pt.
Jury note: evaluate the solution in essence rather than formal presence of sentences/formulae; award points when subsequent steps de facto use the required positions.
