In the region , there is an electric field , where denotes the unit vector parallel to the -axis. Two small balls, each of mass and carrying charge () are connected with a weightless non-stretchable string of length . Initially, at the moment of time , the string is taut, the velocity of the both balls is , one of the balls, the ball , is at while the other ball, the ball is at . The electric field created by the balls can be neglected, and it can be assumed that is very small (much smaller than ).
i) Consider the case when the string is parallel to the -axis, and Sketch the dependence of the velocity of the both balls as a function of time. Will the balls collide? If yes then when? [2 т.]
ii) Now, at , the string forms an angle of with the -axis, . By this string length, at the moment when the ball reaches , the string is parallel to the -axis. Find . [2 т.]
iii) Under the assumptions of the previous task, what is the speed of the ball at the moment ? [2 т.]
iv) Now, at , the string forms a very small angle with the -axis. Similarly to the previous two tasks, at the moment when the ball reaches , the string is parallel to the -axis. Find the string length assuming that . The answer to this point should contain only and numerical constants. [2 т.]

i) (2 т.)
As the ball enters the electric field, the force is exerted on it, hence the acceleration of the system of two balls is ; the acceleration remains constant until the ball exits the field. This will happen when , hence At that moment, the acceleration of the ball becomes zero, but at the very same moment, ball enters the field. The force exerted on it will give it twice as big an acceleration as before, , and the string becomes loose. So, the speed of the ball is now bigger than that of the ball , and so they will eventually collide. The time spent by the ball in the field can be expressed as , where is its initial speed, and — the final speed. So, . At the moment when the ball exits the field, the distance between the balls is , and the difference between the velocities of the balls is , hence the time remaining until the collision . Thus, the moment of collision .

iii) (2 т.)
First solution: Due to the conservation of -directional momentum, the -components of the balls are always equal. At , the string is parallel to the -axis; since it is not stretchable, -components of the balls are equal, too, at that moment. Hence, the speeds are equal, and energy conservation law states so that .
Grading:
- Using energy conservation law (1.0 pts)
- Kinetic energy of both masses (0.6 pts)
- Work done by electric field (0.2 pts)
- Correct (0.2 pts)
Alternative solution: The time period is most conveniently analysed in the centre-of-mass frame. In that frame, there is a force of inertia equal to . Hence, both balls perform non-linear oscillations around the centre of mass (it is nonlinear because the amplitude is not small). The speed of the ball at can be found from the energy conservation law. At , the speed is zero so that the full energy is due to the potential energy in the homogeneous force field : , hence . This gives us the velocity component in the -direction; once we return to the laboratory frame, we need to add the -component of the frame’s velocity so that .
Grading:
- Horizontal speed (0.4 pts)
- Use energy balance or something similar to find rotational speed (0.4 pts)
- Correct distance travelled (0.6 pts)
- Rotational speed (0.4 pts)
- Pythagorean theorem (0.2 pts)
iv) (2 т.)
For the string to be parallel to the -axis, the system must perform half-periods, where is an integer. Since now the amplitude is small, the oscillations are harmonic, and the circular frequency (we can use the formula for a pendulum of length and equivalent gravity field ). So, the travel time must be . On the other hand, we can use the result from task ii: , where and . So, . Since , this equality can only be satisfied with , hence so that .

- Correct rotation time with (0.6 pts)
- Correct rotation time without (0.2 pts)
- Correct travel time from ii (0.4 pts)
- Derivation of (0.4 pts)
