Условие

Two long straight wires X and Y crossing at an angle. Wire X lies along the x-axis carrying current I; wire Y is parallel to the y-axis and passes through (0,0,−a); axes x, y, z drawn; distance 3a marked along wire X; point P above the wire at distance r, with current direction arrows labelled I.

a) Current flows through an infinite, straight, thin wire. There is an externally imposed, uniform magnetic field directed parallel to the wire. Qualitatively sketch one of the magnetic field lines. [1 т.]

b) Now consider two infinite, straight, thin wires (wires XX and YY), each carrying a current II as shown in the figure. The x-axis coincides with wire XX, while wire YY is parallel to the y-axis and passes through the point (0,0,a)(0,0,-a). Let P be the point (3a,0,r)(3a,0,r). Assuming rar \ll a, calculate dd, the distance of closest approach of the magnetic field line that passes through P to the wire XX. [5 т.]

c) Let LL be the length of this field line between P and its point of closest approach to wire X. Using values a=10cma = 10\,\mathrm{cm} and r=1.0mmr = 1.0\,\mathrm{mm}, calculate LL to within 20% relative error. [4 т.]
